In a press release, Tencent says that Turtle Rock Studios was acquired alongside the developer’s parent company Slamfire Inc, and that Turtle Rock will “retain its independent operations” and its existing team “will continue to run all studio operations.” Tencent also stresses that the acquisition won’t affect Back 4 Blood.
“We are all looking forward to joining the Tencent family of studios,” said president and general manager of Turtle Rock Studios, Steve Goldstein. “Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit.”
Eddie Chan, chief strategy officer of Tencent Games Global, said, “We are huge fans of Turtle Rock’s games, especially their amazing approach to creating co-operative online games. We can’t wait to see what comes next, and we’re excited to be part of their future.”
Tencent has been busy on the acquisition front as of late. Back in July, Tencent acquired Crackdown 3 dev Sumo Digital in a deal worth $1.3 billion. Tencent also owns stakes in other big games companies, such as Epic Games, Dontnod, Bloober Team, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, Remedy, and Frontier Developments.
