Effective today, Nexon will allow players to purchase in-game items with “Ethereum, Dogecoin, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” managed by BitPay, which offers “seamless solutions with an easy-to-understand user interface.” First rule of business: Make it as easy as possible for people to spend their money.
If you’re like me, your first thought is that this is related to the $100 million that Nexon sunk into cryptocurrency earlier this year — which then lost 40% of its value over a few months. According to Nexon, however, this service isn’t due to the company’s investments. Instead, it’s because many players “have requested we include cryptocurrencies as a form of in-game payment,” said Nexon America General Manager Kenny Chang.
Further, the press release stated that Nexon’s bitcoin holdings are “held as one of the company’s multiple currencies and as a hedge against debasement of fiat currency. Nexon will not acquire or hold cryptocurrencies related to this initiative.”
Of course, if cryptocurrencies because widely adopted because major companies like Nexon accept them as payment, then they’ll go up in value, which will have an impact on Nexon’s investments.
