Smartphone shipments in India reached 169 million units in 2021 – its highest ever value. According to Counterpoint Research, the total market value was estimated at $38 billion which represents a 27% yearly growth. Demand outweighed supply in Q4 which led to an 8% shipment decline compared to the same period in 2020.
Xiaomi was the clear-cut leader in India with its 24% market share while also reaching its highest level in the premium segment (> INR 30,000 ~ $400) thanks to a 258% YoY growth. Samsung came in second with 18% of the market while vivo took third place with its 15% share.

Realme continued its rise claiming 14% of the smartphone market while boasting the highest growth-share at 20% YoY and also managed to climb up to the number two spot in Q4. Oppo rounded out the top five with its 10% share and was also the fastest-growing brand in the premium segment.

Apple took up a 44% share in the premium segment thanks to strong demand for the iPhone 12 and 13 series while also expanding its “Make in India” campaign. OnePlus hit the 5 million shipment mark and managed a 59% increase in growth mainly driven by its Nord series. Transsion Group (Infinix, Tecno and itel) managed 10 million combined shipments which represents a 55% yearly growth.
